Seth Jayden Eccles was only 19 years old when his life ended in a quiet backyard on a warm Tuesday evening. He did everything right in his final moments when confronted by the police. He didn’t fight back, and he didn’t try to run anymore. He simply followed orders and waited on the grass.
The trouble started earlier that afternoon when authorities wanted to talk to him. They were looking into a robbery involving a mail carrier. Officers initially spoke with the teen but let him walk away. Later on, they discovered he had an outstanding arrest warrant from an older incident.

When police tried to track him down a second time, Eccles took off into the woods near Avondale Estates. Neighbors noticed someone moving through their yards and called 911 around 7:00 p.m. It created a tense situation as police flooded the neighborhood to find him.
Around 7:45 p.m., an officer spotted Eccles hiding in a residential backyard. The officer drew his weapon and shouted commands at gunpoint. Eccles did not resist at all. He immediately dropped to the ground, lying flat on his stomach with his hands behind his back.
He was completely submissive and ready to be taken into custody. There was no struggle or shouting match on the ground. But what should have been a standard arrest turned tragic in an instant. A single, unexpected gunshot broke the evening quiet.
The bullet struck the young man while he was completely helpless on his stomach. Emergency workers rushed to the scene and tried their best to save his life. They transported him to a local hospital, but it was too late, and he was pronounced dead.
Now, a family is mourning a teenager whose life was cut short by a terrible mistake. People are left wondering how a routine arrest could go so horribly wrong when a suspect was fully cooperating. The community is left processing the sudden loss of a young life on a regular Tuesday night.
